Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios wind back the clock to 1995, when a freak accident propels U.S. Air Force officer Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) into the ranks of an intergalactic Starforce, partnering her with Mar-Vell (Jude Law), commander of the Kree, and U.S. government agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). Directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleckbrings bring superhero action to life with visual effects supervisor Christopher Townsend, visual effects producer Damien Carr, special effects supervisor Patrick Edward White and artisans at Industrial Light & Magic, Digital Domain, Framestore, Scanline VFX, Trixter, Lola Visual Effects, Luma Pictures, RISE Visual Effects Studios, Rising Sun Pictures, Method Studios, Animal Logic, Screen Scene VFX and Legacy Effects.  
   
Hellboy  
Director Neil Marshall takes the reins with this new outing for the comic book character created by writer/artist Mike Mignola. In this Lionsgate production, half-demon hero Hellboy (David Harbour) battles the vengeful sorceress Nimue (Milla Jovovich) in an adventure that spans the human and supernatural worlds. Visual effects supervisor Steve Begg oversees work by Mr X., Nvizible, Rhythm & Hues and Worldwide FX, with Joel Harlow contributing devilish makeup effects.  
   
Dumbo  
Tim Burton directs a cast that includes Colin Farrell, Eva Green, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Alan Arkin, in a Walt Disney Pictures production. A remake of the 1941 animated feature, Dumbo features some of the most evocative computer animation ever put to film in its depiction of Dumbo the elephant and other circus animals. CG performances were executed by visual effects artists at Framestore and MPC, under the guidance of production visual effects supervisor Richard Stammers.  
   
Nature of the Beast: Digital Animals  
In the early days of Hollywood, filmmakers had no hesitation putting animals in front of the camera, from Trigger, the galloping steed of cowboy Roy Rogers, to Tarzan's faithful chimpanzee companion, Cheeta. Now, attitudes to animal welfare have changed and digital artistry has matured to the point where many of the creatures that appear on our screens are the product of visual effects. This wide-ranging article explores the history of animals in the movies, and reveals the techniques used by artists to breathe life into cinema's newest digital beasts.
